LARGE DISPLACEMENT ANALYSIS OF BUCKLING OF AXIALLY COMPRESSED CIRCULAR CYLINDRICAL SHELLS,

Abstract

Full expressions for membrane and bending energy densities are derived. The principle of minimum potential energy is used to determine the buckling load. It is found that the buckling load has a dependency on the thickness to radius ratio, t/R. For t/R approaching zero, this buckling load approaches that obtained by neglecting nonlinear meridional and circumferential displacements. For t/R equal to 0.03, the former is 4.5 per cent higher than the latter. A curve is furnished showing the variation of the buckling load with t/R. An erroneous strain-displacement relationship given in Novozhilov's book, 'Foundations of the Nonlinear Theory of Elasticity', is pointed out and corrected. (Author)
