DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT AND FABRICATION OF ULTRA-HIGH STRENGTH SOLID PROPELLANT MOTOR CASES.

Abstract

This report presents a discussion of the results obtained from the hydroburst testing of E.A.F.B. case SN1. Case SN1 burst at a pressure of 1076 psig, corresponding to a Pr/t burst stress of 375,000 psi. A total of five, 6-inch diameter subscale burst tests using test bottles representing the same heats of material in the full scale cases are also discussed. The Pr/t test results on these bottles ranged from 346,000 psi to 375,000 psi, complimenting the highly successful full scale burst. A metallurgical analysis of the tested case and bottles was conducted and is presented to establish the mode of fracture origination and progression. (Author)
