STUDIES AND INSTRUMENTATION FOR ACCELERATING PARTICLES IN A PLASMA.

Abstract

This report discusses the Plasma Betatron. The Betatron was designed, built and operated as proposed. Suggestions are made for future modifications. Transient optical measurements are discussed. An image converter camera was incorporated into the existing experiments. Infrared devices, particularly a laser interferometer, was designed. A 6 inch arc driven shock tube facility was planned, set up and placed in operation. Significant modifications to the vacuum system and the high voltage system were completed. Various instrumentation problems are discussed. The conclusions reached in each of these phases are presented. Appendices present theoretical details for two experiments - the infrared interferometer and the plasma conductivity measurement. (Author)
