REDUNDANCY REDUCTION DEVICE.
Abstract
A study was conducted to establish and evaluate techniques for the reduction of redundancy in pulse code modulated (PCM) telemetry data. An experimental equipment was designed and fabricated to demonstrate one of the techniques developed in the course of the study. The equipment provides for processing up to four multiplexed segments of either real or simulated data (in a prescribed format) to determine the affect of redundancy reduction on the reconstructed data. Two general types of redundancy reduction techniques have been examined. The various techniques have been compared for their relative effectiveness in achieving a reduction in transmitted bit rate. It is concluded that the appropriateness of applying a particular technique depends upon the nature of the data, the initial sampling rate, and the use to which the data is to be put. More impertantly, the application of redundancy reduction should be considered as a part of a complete telemetry system design problem and not as a separate feature to be added to an existing system.
