FEASIBILITY OF DEVELOPING AN HY-180/210 WELDMENT.
Abstract
Studies of the effects of composition and melting and processing practices on the properties of maraging steels have been continued and a final series of experiments to establish the potential of maraging steels as HY-180/210 base metals is now in progress. Carbon-martensite age-hardened steels continue to look promising and a statistical evaluation of their potential has been initiated. Significantly improved combinations of strength and toughness have been obtained in rapidly heat-treated conventional quenched and tempered steels, and this approach to developing an HY-180/210 base metal has been significantly expanded. Base-metal weldability studies indicate that the heat-affected-zone toughness of the 12Ni-5Cr-3Mo steel is not markedly lower than that of the base metal, but that the heat-affected zone is susceptible to cracking. Weld metals having yield strengths in the range 180 to 210 ksi have been developed, but much additional work is required to improve their toughness to the minimum level required for an HY-180/210 weldment. Development of special test procedures and construction of special equipment required to evaluate HY-180/210 steels and weldments have been completed, and tests are now being conducted on experimental HY-180/210 steels to obtain reference properties.
