REINFORCEMENT OF NICKEL CHROMIUM ALLOYS WITH SAPPHIRE WHISKERS.
Abstract
Titanium oxide coatings on single crystal alumina fibers were investigated unsuccessfully as a means to facilitate fiber wetting by liquid iron. Titanium and titanium hydride as additives to the composite system were ingestigated and found to be both destructive to the alumina fibers and promote fiber wetting by liquid metal in some cases. Aluminum-alumina fiber composite ingots were formed using titanium hydride with some fiber destruction, but with good evidence of fiber wetting. (Author)
