THE MECHANICAL AND MICROMECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF BORON.

Abstract

An analysis of the fracture of polycrystalline boron has shown that fracture propagation is affected by microstructure as well as the state of stress. It was found that in the areas of tensile stress, fracture was conchoidal while in areas under compression a transaction to an imperfect form of cleavage sometimes occurs. Twin boundaries, grain boundaries and grain orientation, can influence the progress of a crack. (Author)
