A STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF INDUCTION HARDENING VARIABLES ON THE RESIDUAL STRESSES AND BENDING FATIGUE STRENGTH OF GEARS.

Abstract

Object was the determination of the effect of induction hardening variables on the residual stresses, microstructure, hardness, hardness gradient and bending fatigue strength of gears and pinions. The problem was to determine whether specifications can be developed to increase the probability of purchasing quality induction hardened gears. RESULTS: (1) the power density is related to the sign and magnitude of the residual stress which in turn has a decided effect on the bending fatigue life of the gears and pinions; (2) the power density is related to the depth at which dark etching transformation products start beneath the surface; these transformation products have a decided effect on the fatigue strength; (3) the depth to Rockwell C-50 at the center of tooth hardness gradient governs the sign and magnitude of the residual stress, which in turn affects the bending fatigue strength. CONCLUSIONS: Additional requirements can be specified to assure that a vendor will produce quality induction hardened gears. (Author)
