THERMOCONDUCTIVITY OF SOLID ARGON.

Abstract

The technical difficulties concerned with the preparation of rods of solid argon of good quality, their cooling at helium temperature, and their thermal contact with the measuring heater and thermometers were overcome. Measurements in the temperature range from 3K to about 15K were carried out. It was found that the maximum value of the thermoconductivity coefficient is higher and is found at lower and lower temperatures, as the perfection and purity of the crystal is improved. The maximum value found was 600/cmK at a temperature of about 5K, for a crystal approaching a perfect crystal. The effect of impurities was clearly shown by the measurements. A thorough discussion of the measurements is given in the text of the report. (Author)
