INFLUENCE OF X-IRRADIATION ON DEVELOPMENT OF MICROSOME OXIDASE AND REDUCTASE ACTIVITY IN THE LIVERS OF YOUNG MALE RATS.

Abstract

The influence of x-ray on the development of an oxidase in liver microsomes that catalyzes the oxidative desulfuration of phosphorothioates was studied. Exposure of 23-dayold male rats to 200 r or 400 r almost completely inhibited the development of phosphorothioate oxidase activity during the 3-week observation period following radiation. Substan tial inhibition of the development of oxidase activity was also observed after exposure of the animals to 100 r. Marked inhibition of the development of the enzyme in the regenerating livers of partially hepatectomized rats was observed following exposure to x-ray of 200 r to 600 r. The absence of an inhibitory effect by x-irradiation on phosphorothioate oxidizing activity of the livers of adult male rats suggests that the effect of x-ray is on some process involved in the synthesis of phosphorothioate oxidase. X-irradiation had no effect on the development of reductase activity in the livers of young rats indicating selectivity in the action of x-ray on the development of microsome enzymes. (Author)
