MATERIALS UTILIZABLE IN OPTICAL SYSTEMS WORKING IN THE INFRARED,

Abstract

After reviewing the materials, grouped into families, which may serve in infrared optical systems, and recalling a few concepts of crystal physics, a discussion is given of the most important optical properties whose knowledge enables one to make a judicious choice among all materials. A classification is set up based solely on the refractivity and dispersion of the materials and each is assigned a symbol consisting of letters, permitting one to condense their main characteristics. Attention is called to the thermal and mechanical properties which may influence the performance of the optical systems, or determine the technology of and working of the materials. (Author)
