REACTIONS OF CHLORINE DIOXIDE AND OTHER OXYCHLORD COMPOUNDS WITH ORGANIC COMPOUNDS.

Abstract

The objective of the research was the study of the reaction: g HOCl + h ClO2 anion yields p ClO2 + g ClO3 anion + Cl anion. It was necessary to determine values of g, h, p, q, and r, and since the relative values apparently do shift with such changes in experimental conditions as pH, temperature, buffer concentration, etc. it became necessary to establish a rather detailed procedure for measurements of each molecular species. Under certain experimental conditions the reaction proceeds slowly enough to follow spectrophotometrically and to trace absorbancies with time. One then is able to calculate concentrations of the two reactants, HOCl and ClO2 anion, and the first product, ClO2, during the course of the reaction. Values of concentration of ClO3 anion and Cl anion were determined at the completion of the reaction because no known method allows measurement of concentration of ClO3 anion and Cl anion rapidly enough to trace values during the course of the reaction.
