AUTOMATIC LANGUAGE TRANSLATION.
Abstract
This report summarizes research performed and describes the status of automatic language translation work at IBM as of Dec. 31, 1963. 86,545 entries were either added or deleted from the dictionary. The editing of the dictionary included the incorporation of microglossaries in 13 fields in the main body of the dictionary. As a result of a study, verb entries were classified on the basis of the government of cases. The bidirectional program embodies all major limited environment linkages. It is now ready to be expanded into a sentence-wide syntactic analysis. The multipass program, which is equivalent in its analytic capabilities to the bidirectional program of June 1963, is in the process of being debugged. It will be capable of handling random text.
