BIOCHEMICAL FUEL CELL.

Abstract

The report describes an experimental and theoretical investigation of hydrogen production by microorganisms. Studies with a 1/2(2) to the 5th power fractional factorial design experiment were conducted to define the parameters governing the production of hydrogen by Clostridium welchii. Sixteen 10-liter fermenters were used in this study. In addition, the efficiency of substrate conversion and glucose utilization as well as per-cell hydrogen yields were determined. The results indicate that the combination of low buffer, high substrate, high inoculum, and a pH range of 6.3-6.5 provides maximum total hydrogen in 16 hours. (Author)
