ENGINEERING TEST OF X-BAND MASER FOR WEATHER RADAR SET AN/MPS-34,

Abstract

An engineering test was performed to determine the increase in sensitivity that an X-band helium maser could afford a Radar Set AN/MPS-34. The maser increased sensitivity by 12.5 db. Radar sensitivity improvement suggests many prospects for future uses in nuclear-weather surveillance. These include improved meteorological intelligence and satellite operations. Future plans are explored. Photographs show a comparison in storm detection of Radar Set AN/MPS-34 with and without maser amplification. (Author)
