SOME PROPERTIES OF THE MARTIAN ATMOSPHERE INDICATED BY SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC OBSERVATIONS OF 1956,
Abstract
In 1956, the contrast of the surface details of Mars decreased sharply, while the general color of the planet changed but little. It is concluded that the atmosphere became turbid only in the lowest layers and that no essential changes took place in the general optical properties of the atmosphere itself. Spectrograms of the polar cap, made in the second half of September and early October, showed it to be an atmospheric formation resulting from the condensation of the particles which cause normal scattering in the upper layers of the Martian atmosphere.
