ON A STUDY OF INFORMATION STORAGE AND RETRIEVAL.

Abstract

A preliminary system study was carried out at ASO (Aviation Supply Office) to determine the information needs of personnel and the actions requiring the use of the file for input/output. A study of equipment characteristics is in process and various equipment has been analyzed for suitability. Experimental equipment configurations are being considered as well as commercially available machines. Experiments in man-machine relationships cannot take place until suitable visual display equipment is available, but a research design has been formulated and experiments can begin as soon as the equipment is installed. A further study of the detailed information needs in a real-time environment is planned with further study in the Catalog, Stock Control and Technical sections of ASO. As visual display equipment is obtained for research purposes, the planned series of experiments will be conducted, gradually advancing to more advanced concepts involving changes to the computer executive program in order to provide information in a form which is more compatible with real-time operations.
