Abstract
This report presents a critical analysis of James J. Gibson's theory of visual perception and orientation in space. The more important papers of Gibson, his colleagues and critics, are discussed in relation to perceptual theory and the pilot's visual world. The report also includes an heretofore unpublished application of Gibson's theory to an important problem in training device design: J. J. Gibson and O. W. Smith, 'Sensory Cues and Dyanmic Distortion in a Helicopter Flight Simulator.' (Author)
