A REVIEW OF DIMENSIONAL INSTABILITY IN METALS

Abstract

This memorandum discusses briefly the mechanisms leading to the dimensional instability of metals and alloys, together with some related phenomena: precision elastic limit, microcreep, and microstrain. Information of this type is needed in the design and manufacture of precision devices, such as bearings, gage blocks, gyros, accelerometers, and components of missile guidance systems. Tables of data from available reports and papers are presented for a number of metals and alloys. These should provide a useful source of information for the selection and processing of metals for applications where a high degree of dimensional stability is required.
