TUNNEL DIODES FOR PHASED ARRAY RADAR.

Abstract

Summaries and conclusions are given regarding the work performed and the results obtained in the device and circuits programs during the past year. Detailed discussions of all aspects of the fourth quarter work for both programs are given. Device program work during the fourth quarter included setting up a pilot line for making the 50 contract devices and for determining the distribution of device parameters relative to contract specifications. A study of device R sub s was made to compare the measured values with, first, the calculated values based on actual device geometry and, second, with the minimum theoretical value for the device. In addition, a device reliability study was performed. Circuits program work included noise figure measurements of a tunnel diode amplifier at S-and C-bands. Tests of amplifier phase-amplitude stability were completed. Measurements of the high frequency parameters of contract tunnel diodes using a newly developed technique were also completed. The dynamic range and noise figure of a self-oscillating S-band tunnel diode converter with external synchronizing signal were evaluated. RF and video pulse burn-out tests were made with contract diodes. (Author)
