PILOT PRODUCTION AND EVALUATION OF TANTALUM ALLOY SHEET.

Abstract

This report describes the melting and conversion of 2 ingots of an optimized Ta-W-Hf alloy. This alloy, designated T-222, has the composition Ta-9.6W-2.4Hf0.01C. Preliminary data indicate that T-222 sheet has excellent high temperature strength, viz., 53,000 psi and 24,900 psi ultimate tensile strength at 2400 and 3000F respectively. The alloy also exhibits excellent cold rolling characteristics and good weldability. TIG welds are fully ductile at-250F over a 2.5T bend radius. Additional evaluation planned for T-222 is described.
