HIGH TEMPERATURE, HIGH PRESSURE SYNTHESIS OF A NEW BISMUTH SULFIDE.

Abstract

A new bismuth sulfide (emperical formula BiS2) was prepared by subjecting a 4:11 atomic mixture of Bi and S to a pressure of 50kb and a temperature of 800C for 5-10 min. Results of chemical and X-ray analyses are given. Although the structure could not be established with certainty, it is probable that Bi is present in both the 3+ and 5+ states as in, e.g., Bi(3+) (BiS4) (3-).
