A NOTE ON SHOCK-SHOCK DIFFRACTION,

Abstract

Whitham's treatment of the 'shock-shock' diffraction of a shock wave advancing into a uniform, quiescent region is extended to a shock wave advancing into a region of uniform flow on the assumption that all velocities are approximately parallel. The result is applied to diffraction of a blast wave by a thin wedge travelling at supersonic speed. The prediction of the pressure on the wedge, just behind the diffracted blast wave, is qualitatively satisfactory. (Author)
