MORPHOLOGY OF THE VISIBLE AURORA, ITS RELATION TO MAGNETIC VARIATIONS AND COSMIC NOISE ABSORPTION.
Abstract
An investigation has been made of the morphology of the visible aurora at Kiruna. The study is based on all sky camera films and photometer recordings. The relation between visible aurora and other upper atmospheric parameters is also discussed. It has been found that the maximum auroral activity occurred in 1960 two years after the sunspot maximum. The latitude and time variations of the location of the auroral zone was studied and it was found that the north-south motion of the zone during the night amounts to 1.5 degrees of latitude of the average. The width of the 'half-intensity' zone is seven degrees. (Author)
