GROWTH AND TRADE: SOME HYPOTHESES ABOUT LONG-TERM TRENDS,

Abstract

The paper attempts to sketch very briefly some of the results of recent theoretical work on the relationship between growth and trade. Some observations are made on how foreign trade might have been expected to grow on the basis of widely accepted views about changes in factor proportions and the nature of technological change in the United States. This is followed by a review of the evidence on the growth in world trade and presentation of some evidence on inter-regional trade within the United States. Finally, some suggestions are made for explaining the vigorous growth of trade despite apparently persuasive reasons why it should languish. (Author)
