INTEGRAL WHEEL SUSPENSION UNIT.

Abstract

The purpose of the program was the technical development and testing of an Integral Spring Suspension System (a suspension system which is contained within the wheel and is concentric with the axle) and a Wheel Disc Test program whose purpose was to investigate stress levels and modes of failure in disc wheels. The problems encountered in the suspension system were linkage bearing failures and deterioration of the rubber springs exposed to lubricants. The major problem with the disc wheels was interpretation of test data. It was found that, after design revisions, the suspension unit met the requirements for endurance and low temperature. This effort resulted in a highly desirable 'spring in wheel' unit satisfactory for field test on the M113 APC. It is concluded that progress has been satisfactory. The suspension unit is now ready for field test. (Author)
