NON-METALLIC MATERIALS FOR HIGH TEMPERATURE STRUCTURAL APPLICATIONS,

Abstract

The urgent need for high temperature aerospace materials is hastening the development of the refractory non-metallics, including the carbides, graphites, oxides, borides and beryllides. These materials are discussed with emphasis on high temperature structural applications. A detailed compilation of physical and mechanical property data is presented, aerospace applications described, limitations of the materials reviewed, and promising areas of research outlined. These include (1) the carbide-graphite eutectics for intrinsic thermal shock resistance, (2) the prestressing of oxides for minimizing thermal shock cracking, and, (3) application of pyrolytic graphite at temperatures to 3,000C.
