PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS OF THIRST IN CLOSED OR OPEN SPACES.

Abstract

A review is given of work done at these laboratories on the problem of obtaining an adequate supply of water for drinking purposes, under conditions of unusual stress such as may be experienced by survivors of shipwreck at sea, or by the passengers of a space vehicle. The experimental and practical development of a chemical briquet which converts sea water to a potable fluid is described, for the use of castaways at sea. Several chemical approaches, and an ultimate physical one involving the principle of freeze-drying, are used to produce potable water from urine in a repetitious sequence of physiological and physiocochemical cycling of this vital fluid.
