THE BAUER FIELDS OF VALUES OF A MATRIX,

Abstract

Let A be a linear transformation on a finite dimensional Euclidean space. The classical field of values of A consists of all complex numbers of form (x, Ax) where (x, x) = 1. F. L. Bauer has defined the field of values with respect to an arbitrary homogeneous norm. This report covers Bauer fields of values, the Givens field of values as a special case of the Bauer field of values, absolute norms and B-norms, the extension of Givens results to Bauer fields of values, and the Gerschgorin circles.
