FEASIBILITY OF FORMING REFRACTORY FIBERS BY A CONTINUOUS PROCESS.

Abstract

A technique for the continuous formation of refractory fibers and whiskers was developed. The vapor phase process based on aluminum halide oxidation was shown to be feasible for both batch and continuous whisker production. Substrate powders carried in the gas stream serve as nucleation sites for whisker growth. Aluminum oxide, silicon dioxide and silicon nitride whiskers were grown under the controlled conditions of the process. (Author)
