REFERENCE TEMPERATURE METHOD FOR COMPUTING DISPLACEMENT THICKNESS.

Abstract

Computation of the boundary layer parameters with variable fluid properties is investigated in this report. In particular, calculation of boundary layer displacement thickness is studied in the cases where the variation of the temperature across the boundary layer necessitates consideration also of variation of the specific heats inside the boundary layer. This problem is of considerable significance in computation of viscous interaction effects at high Mach numbers. Since exact computation of the displacement thickness, with variable fluid properties, is extremely cumbersome, an approximate method is given here which permits evaluation of an effective specific heat and determines the displacement thickness in closed form.
