SYNTHESIS OF CYCLOALKANONE ALKYLHYDRAZONES AND FACTORS INFLUENCING ISOMERIZATION TO CYCLOALKANE AZO ALKANES.

Abstract

A chemical equilibrium has been indicated to exist between cycloalkanone alkylhydrazones and cycloalkane azo alkanes. One factor, bond angle strain, was proposed to have an effect on the equilibrium composition of the hydrazone-azo isomers. Consequently, cyclic compounds which had various internal bond angles were used in this investigation. The results of this study indicate that the effect of bond angle strain indeed is a factor in the percentage of hydrazone contained in the equilibrated samples of originally pure azoalkanes. The cycloalkanone alkylhydrazones were synthesized by the condensation reaction of cyclopentanone, cyclohexanone, cycloheptanone, and cyclooctanone with methylhydrazine. The hydrazones were refluxed over KOH to isomerize to the corresponding cycloalkane azo alkanes. The physical properties reported include boiling point, refractive index, infra-red absorption spectra, and ultra-violet absorption spectra. The equilibrium composition was determined with the use of ultra-violet spectroanalyses. (Author)
