DRAG FORCES IN VELOCTIY GRADIENT FIELDS.

Abstract

The report presents work completed to date on an investigation of drag forces on cylinders in linear velocity gradient fields. Theoretical consideration is given to the flow field which develops at the cylinder under the influence of the gradient. Limited experimental data were processed which shows the local drag coefficient is low in regions where the velocity is high and is high where the velocity is low. Average drag coefficients were found to be greater than the conventional value of 1.2 at low cylinder length to diameter ratios in the Reynolds Number range of 10,000 to 100,000. (Author)
