EFFECT OF HYDROGEN CONTENT ON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF TI6AL-4V BAR AT -423F,

Abstract

The effect of hydrogen content on the mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V bar at -423F was investigated. Smooth and notched tensile strength at hydrogen contents of 20, 100, and 200 ppm were determined. The notched tensile strength was determined at three K sub + levels. The K sub + levels were fixed by varying the root radius of circumferentially notched specimens. The results show a statistically significant interaction between notch sharpness and hydrogen content. A dull notch increased the load carrying capacity of the specimens independent of hydrogen content, whereas the load carrying capacity of sharp notched specimens decreased slightly with increasing hydrogen content.
