DISPERSIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE IONOSPHERE.

Abstract

The investigation is divided initially into three categories: (1) Determination of parameters of ionosphere profiles from forward oblique soundings, (2) Path loss and the parameters by which it is affected, and (3) Natural disturbances, irregularities, and their influence on categories 1 and 2. This effort includes the observation, study, and analysis of actual measurements made between the RADC propagation sites at Stockbridge, New York, and Panama, and several intermediary sites located between the two end points. Vertical, forward, and backscatter bidirectional soundings, together with data from a coordinated high resolution amplitude and relative time shift measuring system, are employed for use in the study. The report describes the progress made to date in several categories listed above. The initial effort required in preparation for the study is covered, including the preparatory technique for extracting information on oblique ionograms, equipment preparation, calibration of systems, and the study of refraction and ground effects related to the path loss investigation. The report also describes the observation periods thus far and the nature of the ionosphere during these periods. (Author)
