THIRD ORDER STEADY STATE SOLUTIONS FOR INTERSECTING TRAINS OF GRAVITY WAVES,

Abstract

Third order steady state solutions for intersecting trains of two or three (and more) gravity waves are found. Potential and kinetic energy does not transfer from two (or three) waves with special vector wave number characteristics to a new wave that increases in amplitude. Such singular solutions are eliminated by promoting third order terms nominally to first order and correcting the wave frequencies by additional second order terms. A body of theoretical work on this subject is shown to be wrong as it is based on the assumption that such steady state solutions do not exist. Additional contradictions between these results and results of others are pointed out. Suggestions for further work are given in connection with this extremely difficult problem. An appendix describes a computer program that was written to help do the algebra associated with this problem. (Author)
