A MAXIMUM LIKELIHOOD SOLUTION FOR PAIRED COMPARISONS SCALINGS BY THURSTONE'S CASE V. A MAXIMUM LIKELIHOOD SOLUTION FOR SUCCESSIVE INTERVALS SCALING,
Abstract
A maximum likelihood solution for Thurstone's Case V for paired comparison scaling by the law of comparative judgments. A computing procedure is described and illustrated with a small, fictitious example. A large sample likelihood ratio test is developed for checking on the appropriateness of the scaling model for the data analyzed. Major advantages of the approach lie in the appropriateness of the likelihood approach for dichotomous observations and in the utilization of all observations in obtaining the estimates of the scale values. A maximum likelihood solution for the scaling method of successive intervals is presented together with an iterative procedure for obtaining estimates of boundary scale values, stimulus scale values, and stimulus dispersions. The method is applicable to data matrices with missing entries. It has been programmed for Illiac and tried on two illustrative examples. (Author)
