INVESTIGATION OF NEW CONCEPTS FOR OPTICAL MIXING,

Abstract

The report covers a research program conducted to investigate theoretically new concepts for mixing optical signals to determine which methods warrant experimental development. Particular emphasis is placed on exploring techniques that would be: (1) useful for very high difference frequencies (i.e., above 50 Gc); and (2) efficient mixers of weak optical signals. The major topics in the report are: (1) a discussion of generalized figures-of-merit for photodevices; (2) description and analysis of optical mixers using photoelectric emission; (3) description and analysis of optical mixing in semiconductors; and (4) a discussion of mixing in insulating crystals. The most extensive new analysis presented concerns distributed-emission phototubes and mixing in semiconductors. (Author)
