ON SHARP OPTICAL TRANSITIONS IN CRYSTALS; EFFECTS OF STATIC AND DYNAMIC PERTURBATIONS.

Abstract

The investigation was concerned with the effects of some perturbations on the sharp optical lines emitted by chromium and vanadium ions in MgO. Because the atomic states of the impurity ion are dependent on the lattice environment, it is possible to modify the radiation from such impurity ions by perturbing the host crystal. The following effects were investigated: (i) the effect of the perturbations caused by lattice vibrations (phonons) on the radiation, and (ii), the effects of static perturbations (pressure, magnetic fields and electric fields) on the optical transitions.
