Abstract

The paper surveys and evaluates some of the ideas that were suggested during a search for an improved way of programming problems for machine solution. It attempts to justify the choices that were made in the design of PACT I, a program that produces efficient machine language code for the 701 computer from a concise description of the steps in a calculation.
