RED STAR SERIES ON THE PROBLEMS OF UTILIZING ATOMIC ENERGY. PART IV. THE NUCLEAR POWER STATION,
Abstract
In the first half of the paper the organization of a nuclear power station are examined, the difficulties associated therewith are discussed, and the advantages and disadvantages thereof by comparison with conventional thermal power stations are listed. In the second half of the paper, three methods for transforming atomic energy directly into electrical energy are briefly discussed: (a) by using thermocouples to generate a thermoelectric E M. F.; (b) by using the positive charge on nuclear fission fragments to develop a potential difference between two concentric spherical shells and thus generate an E. M. F.; and (c) by using the electron voltaic effect induced in transitors by beta-particle bombardment. (Author)
