HEAT TRANSFER BY COMBINED CONDUCTION AND RADIATION THROUGH A RADIATING GAS.

Abstract

Combined conduction and radiation through a radiating gas between flat plates and concentric cylinders, having gray-isothermal surfaces, is investigated. The energy equation for weakly absorbing gases and small differences between surface temperatures is solved analytically for flat plates and numerically for concentric cylinders. For concentric cylinders, 114 different digital computer solutions are given. The effects of radius ratio and surface emissivity are illustrated. Finally, an apparatus designed to verify the theoretical calculations, for temperatures less than 2000R and pressures less than 20 atm, is described. (Author)
