WELDING CHARACTERISTICS OF PRODUCTION 5NI-CRMO-V STEEL.

Abstract

An 80-ton electric-furnace heat of 5Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel was produced for extensive evaluation. The evaluation included a two-phase welding study of (1) the base-metal weldability and (2) the fabricability in heavy sections of the production 5Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel. The results of the basemetal weldability study indicate that the 5Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel has adequate hardenability to form the desired tough martensitic weld-heat-affected-zone microstructure for a practical range of welding conditions. The energy absorption of the weld-heat-affected-zone microstructures ranged from 80 to 102 ft-lb at 0 F. The results also indicate that the 5Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel has a low susceptibility to weld-heataffected-zone cracking. The 5Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel exhibited a crack susceptibility similar to that of a low-cracksusceptible HY-80 steel. Generally, the results of the present work indicate that the 5Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel has excellent welding characteristics. (Author)
