GENERAL RESEARCH. EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATIONS OF KADOMTSEV INSTABILITY IN A HIGHLY IONIZED HELIUM PLASMA,

Abstract

Experimental observations of the Kadomtsev currentconvective interaction between a hydromagnetic wave and an electrical current were made using a highly ionized helium plasma to verify the theoretical analysis of Woods. According to theory, the damping of the wave should be modified by the addition of a term, the sign of which depends upon the sense of circular polarization of the wave. Data were taken to determine the dependence of this term upon electrical current, wave frequency, conductivity gradient, and wave polarization. In all instances, the experimental observations are in agreement with the theoretical predictions. (Author)
