THE TRAGEDY OF HUNGARY: A REVOLUTION WON AND LOST,

Abstract

The Soviet decision to intervene with force and crush the revolution in Hungary in 1956 is discussed. The revolution had not only succeeded in Hungary, it had been taken by the Soviets as an unwanted but accepted fact by October 30. Then, in a moment of defiance, the Hungarian people and their leaders on October 31 drove beyond the point of possible Soviet acceptance and led the Soviet leaders to decide upon a course of military intervention and repression.
