COMPUTER PROGRAM FOR ACOUSTIC RAY TRACING,

Abstract

This report describes a computer program for the calculation of underwater sound propagation. Ray tracing methods are used to compute the transit time, direction and location of ray bundles. The problem is assumed to be two-dimensional, i.e., the sound comes from a point source and the ocean properties are assumed to vary only with the depth and horizontal distance (range) from the source. The program treats four kinds of special effects. They are surface effects, bottom effects, sharp interfaces or layers, and regions of strong focussing (caustics). The surface and bottom effects are normally treated using energy conservation principles but the program allows for the inclusion of arbitrary loss coefficients. The sections of this report set forth the mathematical and numerical techniques used to solve this problem and show how to use the computer program.
