ACOUSTIC TRANSIENTS AND IMPACT-ENERGIZED SOUND SOURCE RESEARCH.

Abstract

The program of underwater transient acoustics at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has been concerned with the use of mechanical impact action to produce a short duration, positive pressure pulse of high intensity in the water. An experimental model impact-energized sound source, IMP Mod X-1, was designed and built at Woods Hole. Observed pressure-time curves were in good agreement with those predicted by impact theory. A larger, higher intensity sound source, IMP Mod X-2, is under construction. (Author)
