APPLIED RESEARCH ON A HIGH-POWER V-BAND AMPLIFIER.

Abstract

The applied research on a high power V-band 55 Gc amplifier chain was divided into two phases. Phase I resulted in the design of a CW 1 watt, 30 db amplifier traveling wave tube designated STV-197. Design studies were performed toward a 50 KW high gain, broadband traveling wave amplifier designated STV-198. No further work on the STV-197 was performed on Phase II and no tubes were built. Phase II efforts were concluded with the construction and testing of three experimental pulse final amplifier tubes, but for a 10 KW reduced objective. The data obtained from one of the experimental tubes indicated promise of meeting the specifications. Mechanical type failures caused the three experimental tubes to fail. There is a need for additional work in the areas of: circuit support to maintain straightness, liquid cooling of the circuit, refinement of the rf window for kilowatt power level applications, and reduction of size and weight.
