SEA SCATTERING MEASUREMENTS IN THE REGION FROM 9.6 TO 38 KMC,

Abstract

The measurements were made primarily to determine the variation of back-scattering cross section of the ocean surface with frequency and grazing angle. Data were obtained for vertically polarized radiation over a frequency range from 9.6 to 38 kMc and for grazing angles from 0 to 80 degrees. In addition, since the test was conducted from the bow of a moving ship with CW, phase-sensitive micro wave systems, the doppler frequency characteristics of the returned signals were also measured. In order to determine the effect of height or range on the magnitude of the returned signal, a subsequent test was made overlooking a flowing stream of moderate velocity, and the results are incorporated in this report. From the trends of cross section and doppler frequency with the different parameters. Some insight into the nature of the scattering mechanism can be obtained.
