STUDIES IN EXCHANGE INTERACTIONS TO PRODUCE POPULATION INVERSIONS IN LASER MATERIALS.

Abstract

The pure chlorides of praseodymium and erbium, and mixtures, were investigated with regard to those properties significant in laser application. Cooperative ion absorptions were examined in PrCl3 and the cross section determined for the (3)P0 + (3)F2 level. Lifetime of the (3)P0 state in PrCl3 was determined. ErCl3 as well as Er(3+) in a PrCl3 lattice was examined for coupled interactions. (Author)
